Ask the adjudicator

Our ‘Ask the adjudicator’ feature in 2015 was a lot of fun so we’ve decided to reprise it this year. hj1act 2016 adjudicator Mike Kaiser (meet him HERE) has kindly agreed so it’s game on!

You may remember that last year we had some great questions from our readers with some fascinating answers. (Find that story HERE) So if you’d like to know more about the adjudication process, or maybe you fancy training to be an adjudicator and wonder how to go about it, now’s your chance to find out. Adjudicators and adjudications are an integral part of festivals so knowing more about what goes on behind that little lamp in the dark of the auditorium can only be a good thing.

If you have a question you’d like to ask Mike, write it in the comments section below and we’ll pass it on to him so he can answer it for you. We’ll write up both questions and answers and publish them here so look out for them coming soon.

And if you’re curious about The Guild of Drama Adjudicators (GoDA), click HERE to find out more.

So it’s over to you, dear readers – get asking!

DON’T FORGET: We are still taking entries for hj1act 2016. The entry cut-off date is February 1st so if you’re planning on entering, there’s just a couple of weeks left!  To get your entry pack email us at

COMING SOON: We look ahead to another year

As you know we have several awards too be won at Hj16. The last night is like the Oscars! I see from your bio that you have won several awards yourself. Which do you feel is your greatest achievement in winning and why?

  2. Peter says:

What would you say makes a winning play stand out from the rest?

  3. RWB says:

What do you enjoy most about being an adjudicator?

  4. Paula says:

I see that you once taught drama in Swindon. Where did you teach and what is your
    happiest memory from that time?

  5. Percy says:

Do adjudicators give preference to companies who are brave enough to enter their own work as opposed to published plays?

  6. Leslie says:

If a company has really strong actors but their set design and costumes are less impressive, can they rely on their acting to carry the day?

  7. Nigel says:

We’re not familiar with the Swindon’s Arts Centre or their technical staff. Do you take this in to consideration if there is a technical hiccup that is not our fault?
