Swindon 175 and The Western Players at hj1act

This year, hj1act is supporting Swindon 175. These are the town-wide celebrations marking the 175th anniversary of the Great Western Railway in Swindon.

Back in 1841, Swindon was rural grazing land with nothing much to shout about until Daniel Gooch and the GWR changed the landscape forever.

The Swindon 175 celebrations aim to raise awareness of the town’s incredible heritage and how this was the catalyst which resulted in the very successful town we see today.

Everyone at hj1act is delighted that a theatre company with its roots in that same railway history is performing in this celebration year.

The Western Players originated as “The Great Western Railway (Swindon) Mechanics Institute Amateur Theatrical Society” in the early 1900’s although research has traced the group back even further to 1854!

As part of our final night performances, the Western Players will perform a dramatic reading of a short play about the founding of the GWR in Swindon.
